USB is a horrible connector. but much better than the other rpi storage options: sd cards and usb-thumbstick flashdrives are even worse due to the low quality flash & controllers. the most unreliable storage tech i have ever used. the best is to pxe boot from a proper fileserver and learn to forget all those sd card problems.
