I'd say, start by reading the system documentation / papers, the intro
manpages, and figuring out what you want to work on, and then go from
there.
Basically, "just do it," but... figure out what you want to do, then
what you need to know to do that, then ask specific questions here or in
the grid or in #cat-v, and experiment and play around :)
