Contributions are actually encouraged.

I recall that the site contains a wiki, so that anyone can add his own
comments/suggestions in order to improve the implementations.

Concerning the idea of zipping the source codes as a measure of code length,
I find it quite good, as the zipped code is less sensitive to code layout
than a pure line count and is a decent measure of the information conveyed.
In the opposite, just counting the number of characters is probably worse
than line count, as it would lead to extremely compact unreadable code for
languages like C or Perl (we all know  Obfuscated C and Perl contests).
