OK, the full story is:

ocamlopt.opt: fails without message
ocamlopt: fails with Stack overflow message
ocamlc: compiles the file to *.cmo (correctly, I assume)

this is with Cygwin set to 1024M memory using regtool.
I didn't try ocamlc.opt.
