Put your exception in a separate module, say syntax.mli:

exception Undef_sym of string

Then in parser.mly, you can do:

raise (Syntax.Undef_sym "Ooops!")

and in compiler.ml:

try
  ...
with 
  Syntax.Undef_sym x -> ...
