[Caml-list] English O'Reilly OCaml Book Now Online!

It is my great pleasure to announce that the first fruits of the
_Developing Applications with Objective Caml_ translation project are now
online!  Please go to

where the preliminary version of the English translation of this seven
hundred-odd page book is available for your viewing pleasure!  

This translation is the product of an unprecedented effort by roughly
sixty volunteers worldwide.  What is it about Objective Caml that inspires
so much devotion in so many people?  Now is your chance to find out!  If
you've just been waiting for an English book to introduce you to this
amazing language, this one explains everything you need, including 
OCaml's fundamentals, accompanying tools, and support for software
architecture and concurrency & distribution.  Replete with extensive
examples, it will be of interest even to experienced OCaml aficionados.

As mentioned above, this is a preliminary version.  Some solutions to
exercises have not been translated and some proofreading needs to be
done.  So please excuse any glitches you find, and promptly bring 
them to our attention by emailing the translators' list:

Please feel free to tell us as well if our prose is unclear or awkward.  We
are eager to hear your comments, questions, and criticisms, so we can help
give OCaml the book it deserves.

Note that the book is based on OCaml 2.04, the version current when
the original French was being written, although an appendix explains
the new features of OCaml 3.04 relative to that version.  Since 
OCaml 3.04 is fully backward-compatible with OCaml 2.04, all the
example code should work with this version (or indeed any version
from OCaml 3.00 on).  But if you experience any problems in this
regard, please bring them to our attention.

We must thank the authors--Emmanuel Chailloux, Pascal Manoury, and
Bruno Pagano--as well as O'Reilly, for the monumental task of
producing this book in the first place, as well as their generosity
in approving this translation project and allowing it to go online.

We must especially thank Xavier Leroy for his tireless efforts.  Besides
translating two chapters, he has been the sysadmin of the project and has
also undertaken some of the most tedious tasks of the translation.  I
personally don't understand how he does it---I would have thought just
leading the Ocaml team would have been more than enough work for anybody.
We all owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.

Please join me in a virtual round of applause, thanking all the
volunteers for all their hard work to bring this translation to
the light of day!  Well-done!

Thanks a lot to all translators.

My printer is doing it's job now. :-)
Nevertheless I hope to get a non-draft-version
one day as a book.

Now (or at least, when the english book is published
by OReilly) I think, OCaml has the chance to get
more widespread and more people are using it then.

I do some marketing for it... :)

developpers of OCaml itself.

Great!  It seems that _many_ people in Japan (including me) are
interested in translating this book into Japanese.  Would it be
possible if somebody (I, for example) is determined to organize
translators?

One major problem would be that, unfortunately, not so many native
speakers of Japanese understand French.  So, the translation process
would be (if possible at all):

 (1) translate the English version into Japanese

 (2) check the translation against the Frensh version with a few
     people who understand both French and Japanese (and OCaml)

Another issue would be, of course, about the copyright.

What do you think about this idea?  Suggestions and advice are
welcome.

I think it would be wonderful if somebody (e.g. you) wanted to take this
on.

I can only think of one or two such people, so I hope they're in the mood
for some serious reading... :-)

In general, though, this plan sounds workable to me.

O'Reilly has been extremely reasonable about such matters.  I can put you
in touch with the appropriate editor there.

Now I am determined, received an official agreement from O'Reilly, and
have access to the latex source of the English version.  So I hereby
recruit the translators.:-) (Although there are already some, it is
definitely nicer to have more.)

Dear all,

[Please circulate this message to any people who may be interested.  I
apologize if you received multiple copies.]

The book "Developing Applications with Objective Caml" (by Emmanuel
Chailloux, Pascal Manoury, and Bruno Pagano) is a _very_ nice book
about OCaml, containing numerous examples of interesting applications
as well as comprehensible introductions to basic concepts of the great
language.  It has recently been translated from French into English
(http://caml.inria.fr/oreilly-book/).  So why not translate it into
Japanese?

Although there are already many people in Japan who are studying
and/or using OCaml, even more people---not only in the academy, but
also in the industry---are actually interested but have little access
because of the barrier of (natural) languages.  Thus, a good book in
Japanese will be of great help.

I have already received an official agreement from O'Reilly about
translating the book and publishing it on the web for free.
(Publication from O'Rielly as a real book is also under
consideration.)  I have obtained access to the latex source of the
English version, and am going to set up a collaboration environment
for the Japanese translation as soon as possible.

Basically, the more translators we have, the easier the translation
becomes.  Ideally, I hope that the number of translators be equal to
the number of chapters (about 22).  So, if _anyone_ is interested in
joining this project, please contact me!
