This is because with the current rules -. x**2. means (-. x)**2. instead of -.(x**2.). However, from a mathematical point of view, -x^2 means -(x^2) and never (-x)^2 ... Actually, if nobody objects, I would be in favor of permuting the precedences so -. x**2. actually means -.(x**2.) --- in accordance to the usual mathematical syntax.
