You might want to migrate to a "proper" solution sooner rather than
later.  After all, you might also soon want to add buttons and menus.
Have a look at lablgtk2, here:
http://wwwfun.kurims.kyoto-u.ac.jp/soft/olabl/lablgtk.html
It supports a very capable canvas widget.
