Perhaps a case for a specialised language?  Once you've split up the
mail into monthly archives, something like:

< mail/caml-list.YYYY.MM formail -s formail -x 'From:' | sort -u | wc -l

(This is, I suppose, an argument for not just dynamic typing, but
tolerating a complete lack of checks altogether ...)
