I'm doing a lot of OCaml porting work on OpenBSD. I did not port OASIS for a very long time because of its comprehensive dependencies. The only reason for porting OASIS at last was that I needed to patch _oasis on a port. Still from my perspective I vote for getting rid of the 2-stage setup for two reasons: 1. porting ocaml-data-notation, ocamlmod, ocamlify was annoying enough when all I wanted to port was oasis. 2. This way the porters will be forced to port oasis earlier, but this job will also be a lot easier.
