Asmdynlink (Fabrice's bytecode interpreter for native programs) has a JIT in it, that apparently "mostly works". This is a good compromise for the speed problem, if it works. You can search the list archives for more information (pros and cons) of asmdynlink, and posts related to mixing bytecode and native code.
