There's no harm in asking third-party library authors if they'll sell you a commercial licence, too. This is what has enabled MySQL AB to release a popular database as free software. From the library vendor's point of view, the GPL is better than the LGPL for this purpose, because using the GPL requires more developers of non-free software to pay for commercial licences, thus providing more financial support for free software.
