I was silly to think it's change in 4.00.0, this was out-of-space in /tmp.

In yacc/reader.c at line 1772 it doesn't check fprintf result and continues silently so I get puzzling incomplete results.
I would put something like
#define ERR_CHECK(result) if((result) < 0) exit(2)
in yacc/defs.h and put it around each fprintf.
