Does anyone have a sense of the extent to which F# is (could be) a
viable entry in the .NET arena, as opposed to an entertaining exercise?

There's also Nemerle :

    http://www.nemerle.org/

which is a cross between C# and Ocaml. I uses infered types and has
Ocaml-like pattern matching.
