Hello, Due to the recent troubles on freenode[1][2], I've connected to irc.libera.chat early in order to create and register the same channels that I know and take care ofa on freenode (i.e. #ocaml and #ocaml-fr). I am not stating libera.chat is better than freenode.net although the amount of staffers moving makes me think freenode.net will not be running fine for a much longer time. At the moment I believe it is better to keep both channels running and to encourage people to connect on libera.chat too. In the future, I might force migration by progressively silencing the channel that should be abandoned. If you maintain a relay bot, can you please add it on libera.chat too? As far as I know, there is no Matrix bridge available currently. It seems the discussion/process for bridge additions occurs at [3]. A good news is that I've gotten the full rights on the channel, something which was requiring paperwork on freenode (which I had already mentioned but never got around to doing and for which I never even remotely got time for). Hello, Due to the behaviour of the new team on freenode, the future is clear and has occurred much earlier than I had thought. The former freenode staffers had been fairly good at doing things with people; the new staffers seems to not prioritize communication and seems to have a BOFH attitude instead. As such everyone is quickly moving to irc.libera.chat and the control of the #ocaml channel on freenode has been lost. Please point to irc.libera.chat instead of irc.freenode.net in all your links. The matrix bridge is not available but should happen soon. As for the dicord bot, I have no control about it. In any case, it's not worth waiting to change your links because #ocaml on freenode has been bleeding users, which means there are far far fewer people there to answer questions. An explanation of what happened today. A few hours ago, it all channels mentioning "libera" in the topic and without a group registration but using a single # in their names have been automatically changed to automatically redirect people to their counterparts with double ##. Their topic has been changed. While this comes from a long-time freenode policy, the the channel has existed for almost 18 years and staffers never enforced it (and the group registration stuff was impossible during a decade). That this only applies to channels which mentioned "libera" in their topic exemplifies well the attitude of the new staffers. Best, -- Adrien
Hello, Hopefully this is the last part of the story. Yotam Barnoy has set up the discord bot to use libera.chat. The matrix bridge is unofficially available now. The schema has changed and is now #ocaml:libera.chat . Some downtime should be expected in the near future but the fact is that the bridge is available. If you have control over something that still mentions freenode.net, please update it to use libera.chat instead. Thanks, -- Adrien
[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 1246 bytes --] Dear Adrien (and list), Thanks for taking care of the migration! I don't use IRC regularly anymore (it eats my time and makes my content hard to find again), but I have made good use of whitequark's excellent IRC log services over the last decade https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/ocaml/ Currently the log looks like #ocaml on freenode is still being logged, but this channel is now empty. (Of course logs still exist for any past discussions.) Is there a similar log service for the libera.chat channel? whitequark's webpage has a "Contact whitequark if your channel migrated to another network" message, has anyone done so for #ocaml? (If not, I just cc-ed whitequark.) [-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 1986 bytes --] Hi all, Just to let you know that I spent a time to re-implement the IRC protocol in OCaml and to deploy a simple MirageOS as a logger to save discussions into a Git repository. The bot is currently deployed, the explanation is available here: https://github.com/dinosaure/cri/tree/master/unikernel And used for #mirage@irc.libera.chat It's a nice example about MirageOS/unikernel and I may deploy one to save #ocaml@irc.libera.chat as whitequark already does with her bot.
