I'm working on parallel stuff in OCaml too (but in a
more erlang-way than parmap), so I decided to use
exceptions for inter-process messages, and
serialize them as strings to pass them to other
processes:

It was daunting for me that exceptions are not
serializable, but everything that goes into / out of
executable is not safe, so I accepted strings
as error messages.
