To add some numbers to the productivity debate, take a look at the
paper describing Horus vs. Ensemble with line-counts, performance
measurements,
memory requirements, etc. The nice thing is that both systems are really
similar, provide
the same functionality, where one was written in C, and the other in ML.

Distributed Communication in ML , Mark Hayden, Journal of Functional
Programming 2000.
