For those interested:
The gcc compiler shipping with MacOS X.2 reacts incorrectly to option
-ggdb (which normally means: output supplementary debugging information
suitable for gdb). This option makes it output incorrect assembly code, on
which the assembler chokes.
The solution is to replace -ggdb by -g in the Makefile.
