It is obvious that at this point changing the default behavior would not
be possible. However, adding the new "immutable strings" type would
definitely be great and adding a compiler flag that would turn all
string constants, "^", etc in a given module into immutable string
operations would be nice as well and would not break any existing code.

But why don't you add such a type yourself?
