Keith Harbaugh <keith.harbaugh@gmail.com> writes:

Apart from Grothendieck himself, Cartier went a bit into them from his
perspective in "A Country Known only by Name", but the most interesting
account I know, because it isn't from either side, is the chapter "A
Trip to Nancy with Alexander Grothendieck" in "The Mathematician's
Brain" by David Ruelle, who was working there at the time. Quote:

"It may be hard to believe that a mathematician of Grothendieck's
caliber could not find an adequate academic position in
France after he left the IHES. I am convinced that if Grothendieck
had been a former student of the Ecole Normale and if he
had been part of the system, a position commensurate with his
mathematical achievements would have been found for him.…

Understandably, some people would like to blame Grothendieck's
exclusion entirely on Grothendieck himself: he went
crazy and left mathematics. But this does not fit with the known
facts and their chronology. Something shameful has taken place.
And the disposal of Grothendieck will remain a disgrace in the
history of twentieth-century mathematics."

Dear Keith,

I recommend this recent interview with Colin McLarty

https://youtu.be/81sPQGIWEfM?feature=shared<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/vR6lCzvkmpfMR6EnLf4f0C9YOHJ?domain=youtu.be>

which covers much more than your question, but puts a lot of things into context. Colin uses the word 'betrayal' in a discussion of how Grothendieck viewed how Deligne proved the last Weil Conjecture at about 32:34 and after. Grothendieck was very unhappy with how the conjecture was proved without going via the Standard Conjectures (which he thought had been used, when he first heard in while in Buffalo that Deligne had done it, without knowing the details).

I have listened to the whole interview, but can't point to a single place where you'll get a good answer, because it's a bit distributed. But I would definitely say listen to the whole thing, it's really good.

All the best,

--

Is there any discussion within the French mathematical community of the validity of that charge?
References, please.

I know this brings up some issues.
I think it would be worthwhile to discuss them.

Hi Keith,

I guess is in "Recoltes et Semailles":

" [...] ni, en ces dernières années, par les épisodes souvent assez dingues d’un certain “Enterrement” (anticipé
et sans bavures) de ma personne et de mon œuvre, orchestré par mes plus proches compa-
gnons d’antan. . . "

under the section 2. L'importance d'etre seul.

Hope this helps! .
Federica

P.S. Sorry if I am not putting accents, but I am without a French keyboard atm.
P^2.S. This is a very good book to read ...
