Dear Editor

Professor Bernhard Banaschewski died on Monday 1 November. His main fields of interest were Algebra, Topology and Category Theory. His 90th birthday was celebrated in March 2016 at ATC 2016: Symposium on Algebra, Topology and Category Theory held at UCT, the University of Cape Town. Covid prevented him attending further meetings (he was not a friend of computers) so to celebrate his 95th birthday, his circle of mathematics' friends compiled messages to him which were printed out and then relayed by hand to his apartment in Hamilton, Ontario.

Bernhard was awarded Honorary Doctorates both by UCT in 2000 and by McMaster University in 2017 (see this somewhat informal article in the Hamilton Spectator announcing the latter

Bernhard had over 220 publications cited in MathSciNet. His talks were exemplary and appreciated by a much wider audience than the specialists in the topics.

All of us - students and colleagues - found him an inspiration and many of us owe much to the generous sharing of his research and, in the case of students, mentorship.

He will be very much missed.

Christopher Gilmour
