Binary, for things for which there was no source (like SPITBOL).  To edit 
the source, you used a keypunch :-)

Which reminds me; our SPITBOL was just a demo program, until I nobbled it; 
the "real" one (no time bomb) cost many $$$ which we couldn't afford.
