G m (specify nnml as the type) works fine. I'd prefer it not to be
created automatically in the instance you cited:
1) Gnus does not create groups when splitting mail (a feature).
2) Deletion of unwanted nnml groups is fairly awkward right now,
requiring stopping Gnus, editing the active file by hand, and
restarting.
3) You can achieve the same effect by switching to the *Group* buffer
(C-x 5 b or the equivalent) creating the group with G m, and then
switching back.
4) Assuming default group creation mode (making new groups zombies)
explicit creation with G m is *much* more convenient.
