So, here we have a nice topic hierarchy:
Gnus
misc
10: news.admin.misc
2: news.admin.abuse
Miskit
4: comp.mail.readers
My Mail
1245: gnus-bug
356E18: mail.ding
So, I want to move the "Miskit" topic from the "misc" topic into the
"My Mail" topic. How do I specify that I want to do it? I kill the
"Miskit" topic with `C-k' as usual, and then I move point to, uhm, "My
Mail" and press `C-y'. Then "Miskit" becomes a subtopic of "My
Mail". If you `C-y' on a group, then "Miskit" will become a top-level
topic.
Now, this works, but I find it incredibly finicky. It also means that
I can't order topics inside each sub-topic -- when I `C-y' on a topic,
the yanked topic becomes the last subtopic of that topic.
Are there other newsreaders with hierarchical group displays? How do
thay do it? Would it help with a separate topic buffer for
reordering?

Why not have the subtopic appear where you press `C-y'?
I think it would be easier to understand the listing if indentation
was used for both topics and groups:
Topic A
group under topic A
group under topic A
Topic B under topic A
group under topic B
group under topic B
group under topic A
Topic C under topic A
group under topic C
Topic D under topic C
group under topic D
group under topic A
Topic E

Yes, but.

I now want to insert Topic D in Topic A after topic B. I would then
put point on the line marked "*". Ok. By say I wanted to insert
Topic D in Topic B after the group marked "+". Then I would also put
point on the line marked "*", right?
Which makes it difficult for Gnus to guess at what I want.
But I agree with the indentation thingie--the groups should be
indented with the topics.

Have you taken a look at the outline modes floating around? The "kotl"
mode stuff in hyperbole has key bindings (bound to `TAB' and `ESC TAB')
for demoting and promoting an item in the hierarchy. In that model, you
would yank Topic D with point right after the "+" group. If it doesn't
come out at the right level in the hierarchy (presumably, it'd either be a
new top level Topic or at the same level it was when you killed it), you
hit TAB to get it there. How's that sound?
