The "kotl" mode stuff in hyperbole has key bindings (bound to `TAB' and `ESC TAB') for demoting and promoting an item in the hierarchy. In that model, you would yank Topic D with point right after the "+" group. If it doesn't come out at the right level in the hierarchy (presumably, it'd either be a new top level Topic or at the same level it was when you killed it), you hit TAB to get it there.
