You could also use
gnus-thread-sort-by-total-score
and then set
gnus-thread-score-function
to some function taking the average.
E.g:
(defun arithmetic-average (&rest numbers)
(/ (apply '+ numbers) (length numbers)))
(setq gnus-thread-score-function 'arithmetic-average)
