Well, here's how it usually breaks for me (note that I use 5.0.12 and gnus-summary-make-false-root set to 'none, choosing to gather the threads but not adopt, but the same situation applies): original post followup by higher-scoring poster with broken newsreader (no references) since I sort by number *and score*, the higher-scoring poster's Re: article will appear before the rest of the thread (since it sorted first before the gathering), like this: Re: blah (high scoring poster) blah Re: blah (posters with working References) [etc]
