The result? A near-immediate complaint about the lack of menu-bar-mode at startup. For what it's worth, this hassn't been a problem with non-September Gnus 5.0.13. Short of convincing the folks at panix to bring up a new emacs with X support linked in (which, since we can only run it via telnet or dialup connections, would only server to bloat the image size), I have to stick with 5.0.13.
