Oops. I was partly confused, h.b.furuseth had the right of it:

In any case, you don't even see the name until the file is
complete. This works with UFS and NFS. (I think it breaks under AFS,
actually, since it can't handle hardlinks across directories, but AFS
is stupid in a lot of other ways too :-)
