After loading url.el (via nnweb), nntp.el then starts messaging things
like "Read 596 byte" (etc). Is there a way to switch this behavior
off?

In fact, all the nntp asynch thingies go missing after loading url.el.
Does url.el alter some `after-change-functions' fundamentals?

No, but it defines `nntp-after-change-function'. Tsk, tsk. We use
separate prefixes in different packages for a reason, you know. Tsk,
tsk, William.

Sorry - old code that wasn't even used anymore. Removed for the next
dist.
