Actually, that's "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" and so it

really isn't redundant (i.e. the USSR was the union of the Soviet
Socialist Republic of Byelorussia, the Soviet Socialist Republic of
Ukrainia, the SSR of Turzekhistan, etc...)
