I haven't touched that:

gnus-ignored-newsgroups's value is "^to\\.\\|^[0-9. 	]+ \\|[][\"#'()]"
  -- a variable declared in Lisp.

Which does match "342.71 ", but doesn't match "3dfx.products ", say.
