You're right, of course. For backends where each article or message is in a
single file, then glimpse provides enough information to allow you to
construct such a list (i.e., it gives you the filenames!). This is what exmh
does, since that's how mh articles are stored.
Glimpse has the advantages that it's fast after you've build the index (even
for entire filesystems), and it provides approximate matching, which is cool.
