I have posted a question in gnu.emacs.gnus, and Lars says that mail-extract-address-components doesn't try to be very RFC-compatible, but that there is a function mail-header-parse-address which gives better results. I think you can't just use that function instead of mail-extract-address-components, though, since the return values are not compatible.
