I noticed that Gnus abbreviates group names in buffers
(i.e. "rec.photo.darkroom" becomes "r.p.darkroom").
In general, this behavior is nice. However, when the
last component of the group name if "moderated", the
abbreviation is less useful (i.e. "comp.lang.c.moderated"
and "comp.lang.c++.moderated" both become "c.l.c.moderated").
How about spelling out the penultimate component instead
in such cases (yielding "c.l.c.m" and "c.l.c++.m")?

I just detect the patterns which matter to me, and use the full name
in those cases. Normally, it bugs me when ephemeral nnir search
groups get their names reduced to nearly ntohing.
