I'm runing gnus 5.13 in emacs 23.2.1, under Debian Squeeze. While
composing a message in gnus I inadvertangly hit the keys that shut
down my X server (I manage to that every so often ;-( .)

I restarted the server and then emacs. I issued the command M-x gnus
to go back to gnus, but I was told

  "unable to open server nntp+news"

Nothing has changed in my ~/.gnus file, and I can ping my primary and
secondary news servers.

I did M-x gnus-bug and got the following debug:

  Debugger entered--Lisp error: (error "Gnus has been shut down")
    signal(error ("Gnus has been shut down"))
    error("Gnus has been shut down")
    gnus-bug()
    call-interactively(gnus-bug t nil)
    execute-extended-command(nil)
    call-interactively(execute-extended-command nil nil)
    recursive-edit()
    byte-code("\306

  this was followed by a lot of byte code that won't past here becasue
  I'm using mutt in a terminal to write this.

Thereafter when I try to do

  M-x gnus-bug
  M-x set-variable RET
  debug-on-error RET
  t RET

nothing happens except in the emacs minibuffer gnus tells me:

  "unable to open server"

or sometimes it says

  "please wait while we snoop your variables..."

and eventually gives up.
