Does anyone on this list know who made these images?

I drew most of the images in etc/images/gnus/ for the original Gnus
release and I've already signed the papers for them.

I did not draw any of the ones in etc/images/mail/ or
etc/images/smilies/ but I vaguely remember there being a discussion
on the ding mailing-list about a request for colour icons for the
toolbar.

The file etc/images/README (in Gnus CVS) describes the origin of the
new Gnome-style icons in detail.

If considered useful, this file could be installed and synched in
Emacs CVS, e.g. as `etc/images/README.gnus' (just ask Miles Bader to
sych it).

Bye, Reiner.

Thanks, I used it to improve the various etc/images/README files in
Emacs.

I don't think we need to add it to Emacs, partly because it duplicates
information already there (in various separate README files), partly
because it refers to images which are not in Emacs (yet?), which might
be confusing.

But this means it will be necessary to remember to transfer the
information to the Emacs README files when a Gnus update changes the
icons in Emacs.

The Gnus README does not describe the copyright or license details of
the various icons files (compare with the READMEs in Emacs etc/images/
directories).

I'd expect all images from Gnus (v5-10 = stable branch) mentioned in
Gnus to be present in Emacs as well.

Yes.

Sorry, the README file only contains information about the recently
(in 2006) added images, not about the old ones.

WRT separator.xpm: I originally used the file from AUCTeX ...

2006-02-21 Miguel Frasson <frasson@math.leidenuniv.nl>

	* etc/images/separator.xpm: Copy of sep.xpm from AUCTeX.

... but later Bill Wohler (ex?)changed it as described in
etc/ChangeLog. Bill?

Bye, Reiner.

You're right, I don't know what I was going on about. I may have been
confused by the Adam Sjogren icons, which I thought were not in Emacs
yet, but I see that they are.

I'm confused. The version I'm looking at

http://quimby.gnus.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/gnus/etc/images/README

has no Copyright or license info for any files. I'm saying I think you
should add it, in a similar way to the READMEs in Emacs.

All I tried to say is that it includes information about the *origin*
(not about copyright though [1]) of the files added in 2006 (not about
the older ones).

> I'm saying I think you should add it, in a similar way to the

In order to avoid manual work with synchronizing, I'd suggest to
include emacs/etc/images/{,mail/,gnus/,smilies/}README unmodified in
Gnus so we don't need to manually pick out parts of the Emacs files.
It doesn't matter much IMHO that the top level README mentions some
files not present in Emacs. A separate file [2] there could explain
this fact an include the information from the current
gnus/etc/images/README which is not present in
emacs/etc/images/README.

Miles, could you please arrange this unless someone objects?

Bye, Reiner.

[1] When we (Bill Wohler and me) added the Gnome icons, Richard didn't
request it, IIRC. See the following threads...
    http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.gnus.general/61012/focus=61054
    http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.gnus.general/61185/focus=62021

[2] gnus/etc/README.images? gnus/etc/images/gnus.README or
    README.gnus?

Let's see if I remember correctly (and the CVS logs may or may not
corroborate) about that time we revamped the icons. There had already
been a README that indicated where the existing (GTK) icons came from.
It had text like "The following icons are from GTK+ 2.x and GNOME 2.x.
They are not part of Emacs, but distributed and used by Emacs." but I
don't think that it had any more copyright information. I don't think I
added anything more than that. At the time, I merely updated the text to
indicate a more recent version of GNOME/GTK, and included a lot more
icons. I also added the recipe for creating PBM versions.

I vaguely remember the AUCTeX stuff, but the ChangeLog and diffs, of
course, would be authoritative.
