A message with these headers got posted to gnu.emacs.gnus:

Gnus not only put a pretty happy yellow smiley face at the end of the
subject line, but also one at the end of the date line. Waving the
mouse around caused the entire region from after the subject smiley to
the end of the headers to be highlighted; pressing button3 brings up
the smiley menu, but the options there have no effect.
Reasonably current oGnus, XEmacs 21.1.4.

I don't see the problem in XEmacs 21.2.44. Anyway, Gnus is not
supposed to put smiley faces in article headers. I've fixed this.
Please test it.
