The difference is their levels, 8 for zombie and 9 for killed. When you browse a server (gnus-browse-foreign-server), all unknown groups are listed as killed. In some Gnus, for example 5.8.3, zombie groups are also listed as killed. However, when you subscribe a zombie group, Gnus didn't delete it from zombie-list. That's the bug.
