Using nnweb with dejaynews some searches give this message:

Lisp nesting exceeds max-lisp-eval-depth

Full output of *Messages* buffer:

Contacting www.deja.com:80
Request sent, waiting for response...
Reading [text/html]... 5k
Retrieval complete.
Mark set
Unknown URL scheme: nil
Parsed 17% of 7796...

Parsed 65% of 7796...
Parsed 91% of 7796...
Parsed 100% of 7796...done
Lisp nesting exceeds max-lisp-eval-depth

What is happening here? Is it that gnus cannot understand a URL
scheme? Or just too many hits on the search string or something.

What is the version of the w3 you are using?

Try to upgrade your Gnus and w3.

This only happens on the occasional search.
My gnus is pgnus-0.99 (cvs just prior to 5.8.X releases)

w3 is:

WWW 4.0pre.44, URL p4.0pre.44, MM 1.96

Should I really need to be concerned about these versions needing
upgrading?

I believe upgrading WWW to 4.0pre.46 will fix your problem.
