MH-E has mh-sort-folder which sorts by date. You can pass a prefix argument which tells it to use mh-sortm-args in which case the sort is custom. We'd use the sort-ascending icon. If possible, it sounds like what would work well for Gnus is to use the sort-ascending icon that doubles as a pull-down menu.
