You can read a Maildir directly with Gnus, or you can run an IMAP
daemon on top of the Maildir and connect to it with Gnus.  You seem to
be trying to do the latter without an IMAP daemon.  Courier IMAP is a
good one, for example.

Don't set the list pattern if you don't have to.  If you already have
an IMAP daemon, just open it from the server buffer (`^' from the
group buffer) and subscribe to its groups (`u' in the server buffer n
an unsubscribed/unknown group).
