I think this would be a great feature.  The customization interface
currently looks like this:

INS DEL Cons-cell:
            Regexp: 
            Repeat:
            INS DEL Lisp expression: nil

I think topics could simply be an alternate choice under Regexp; you
should be able to say "Topic Regexp," "Topic Exact," "Group Regexp,"
and "Group Exact."

Also, the Lisp Expression should be an alternate, but not the main
choice.  The user should be able to pick from a predefined list of
variables.  That would improve usability.
