I try to forward an article and encrypt but the mailcrypt menu bar
does not appear...  I can see it when using the summary buffer but not
when composing or forwarding email/articles...

Sure. Although it needed recompiling on XEmacs 19.14... I use
mailcrypt for signing, verifying and encrypting all the time.

Did you (add-hook 'message-mode-hook 'mc-install-write-mode) ?
(The Mailcrypt manual is out of date in respect to Gnus and the
(relatively) new message-mode.)

to get much.  Are there any other PGP keyservers that are more
up-to-date/working that we could use with Mailcrypt?

I've now gotten the following to work:

     (setq mc-pgp-keyserver-address "www.no.pgp.net")

Yes, the timeout really needs to be that high.  What on Earth are they
using to search the keys?  MS Basic running on a 286?  I mean, they
need to search a 4-byte ID amongs only 20000 keys, and it takes 2
minutes?  *boggle*

However, the Automoose-1's key isn't there.  Should I point this thing
somewhere else?

Another possibility, which is now working for me, is:

(setq mc-pgp-keyserver-address "swissnet.ai.mit.edu"
      mc-pgp-keyserver-port 11371
      mc-pgp-keyserver-url-template "/pks/lookup?op=get&search=%s")

This seems to be much faster (and doesn't need the timeout), but is
clearly marked as a "BETA TEST" server on the associated web page.
Use at your own risk.

Yes, the reason the BETA server is *much* faster (some operations are
as much as a *hundred* times faster) is that Marc Horowitz rewrote it
as his MIT SB thesis project.  The other servers actually use PGP to
do some of the work, and well, that's why they're so slow.

Not quite.  The problem is that the way PGP is currently written key
lookups are *HIDEOUSLY* slow on large keyrings.  It is a brute-force
linear search; PGP keyrings are unsorted, so the search has to go
through each and every key to find a match.

PGP 3.0, currently in develpment, addresses this issue.

Since all the keyservers are (supposedly) synced every <mumble> hours,
it should not matter much which server you use.  The only really
important reason to change which server you look at for keys is to find
something closer to you than the one at MIT.

No, I don't, because I have `gnus-article-hide-pgp' in my
`gnus-article-display-hook'.  :-)
