Perhaps it is installation problem. You need reinstall pgnus. 

In XEmacs, gnus use message-xmas-make-caesar-translation-table the
function in messagexmas.el instead of
message-make-caesar-translation-table in message.el

If you can not use `configure' and `make install', try load
messagexmas.el in .gnus.
