To switch away from the gnus shipped with XEmacs and start using pgnus (or
now ognus) from the cvs repository, I added my replacement gnus/lisp path to
my load-path. This causes XEmacs to load my gnus instead of the normally
autoloaded one. Is this the best way to do this or should I remove gnus
from the packages directory and put in a symlink to my gnus cvs repository in
its place?

Yes, this is the best way to do it. It's simple and it works, and you
can go back to the old Gnus, and stuff.
