Indeed, I have signed Emacs papers. I hope that's enough, but if this
turns out to be a problem then please let me know and I'll help with the
necessary paperwork for Gnus as well.

The variable is utf-7 encoded while the function returns the decoded
name, so using the variable would make the name would look garbled in
that message. In general, I tried to use the functions in imap.el that
deal with decoded names, to keep it clean. There are a few cases where
the variable is still used, when only nil/non-nil matters.
