I think gnus automatically detects if the mbox file is using MMDF
format.

$ cd nnml-folder-dir
$ for i in $(ls|sort -n);do echo -e '\1\1\1\1';cat $i;done>../mboxfile

Of course, that assumes that none of your messages already contains
four ^A characters alone on a line.
