Okay, imap.el was sending the LOGOUT command, so that explains why
the connection was taken down. And I think you correctly diagnosed
the "abnormally" part.
There are only two places in imap.el where a buffer is killed. This
happens when imap.el tries more than one stream to open a connection
to the remote end. I wonder if that is the problem? Can you follow
things on opening the connection to see if this is the cause?
