This could be worked around by storing the numbers together with the
msg ids. Hm. Ugly.

Keep a list of unseen ids :-)
But there are problems with using the numbers, too, so I think it
would be useful to get a list of pros/cons or a discussion or
something like this so that somebody might have a bright insight how
to combine the advantages of both.
